Supergroup-User
Last Updated: August 26, 2026
If you found this page in your server logs, this is what was visiting and why.
What it is
Supergroup is a messaging app with an assistant in it called Groupie. When someone pastes a link into a conversation and asks what it says, Groupie opens that one page and reads it, the way a person clicking the link would. Supergroup-User is the name that fetch travels under.
It identifies itself like this:
Supergroup-User/1.0 (+https://supergroup.chat/bot.html)
The -User on the end is doing real work, and it is the same convention ChatGPT-User and Claude-User follow: every visit supports an active question from a person. The page may be a link they shared or a result Groupie selected while answering them. We run no crawler. There is no training corpus being built here and no index being maintained. If nobody asks, we never come.
How it behaves
- It is not a crawler. It fetches one selected page (following ordinary redirects). It does not follow links out of the page, and it does not walk your site.
- It only visits while answering a person. There is no schedule and no crawl queue. Every page request traces back to an active question in a conversation.
- It reads
robots.txtfirst, including before following a redirect, and honors groups that explicitly name the product tokenSupergroup-User. It does not applyUser-agent: *rules. - It caches. A running Supergroup server reuses the same page for fifteen minutes, so repeated reads usually do not become repeated page requests.
- It does not execute JavaScript, does not submit forms, does not accept cookies between visits, and never tries to get past a login or a paywall.
- It does not train anything. Pages are read to answer the question in front of it and are not retained as training data.
Blocking it
Add this to your robots.txt and it will stop, usually within a few hours and at most within six:
User-agent: Supergroup-User
Disallow: /
You can also allow part of your site and refuse the rest, the usual way:
User-agent: Supergroup-User
Disallow: /
Allow: /blog/
Wildcard rules: A User-agent: * rule does not stop this user-triggered fetcher. To block it, use the explicit Supergroup-User group above.
We would rather be told in robots.txt than be quietly rate-limited, and we would rather you block us than serve us something you did not mean to share. Either way, no hard feelings.
Getting in touch
If Supergroup-User is behaving badly, ignoring your rules, or costing you more than it should, please tell us at hey@supergroup.chat — that is a real inbox and we would genuinely like to know. If your content is licensed for automated access and you would like to talk about it, the same address works.
